this must be a very old photo,i started as a cleaner in 1954,the shed nearest to main line was a concrete building, split in two sections first section on entering was for stabling, next section [over the line] was fitters worked.next to this shed was where the steam crane stabled. then there was the old shed, thena road where the sand was stored prior to being loaded into sand drier[sandole]by a cleaner.then there was the turn table.

All the engines are vintage, in 1950, when I started working at Springs Branch, Black 5s and Class 8s where the main engine types with a few Class 7 Super 'D', older engines. I can see none of these in the photo. This is certainly pre-39,45 war and much earlier.

Good shot of the Branch i have been asked to enquire as to does anyone from the 1960 to 1968 working at Springs Branch ever know a young boy from school his name was LESLIE MICHAEL HAYES .. Went by the name MICK he left school in 1961 until 1968/9

I remember mick very well. We were cleaners together. I seem to remember he lived towards Leigh. I walked passed him in wigan many years later and could not believe how little he had changed. He was probably made redundant with me in 1968.
