Hi Alan, What a Fantastic set of photographs. Have you any more? If you have. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who would love to see them.
must agree superb pics
hamar fancy goods in the middle, thats where i got my first cb radio, a MUSTANG CB 1000 i think.
The Square Deal Shop on the corner, used to sell household goods, hardware and fancy goods.
Duncan the shop was Bill Davies's
Great pic. I too remember buying my CB stuff from Hamar. I don't think there's any shop in Wigan these days that sells CB radios and other similar gadgets. Got to buy off the web.
Was there a music shop around that part called Chamberlain,s.Been thinking for days were it was.
Yep the music shop, is now a computer shop. next to the Griffin pub and the entrance to the garage.
Thanks for that Ron.
Betty, Chamberlain's music shop was originally further down Standishgate near the corner of Mesnes Street, think the shop is an American Diner now. Chamberlain's later moved up to the shop near the Griffin, that would probaly be in the late 70s or early 80s.
The shop that your talking about near mesnes st,I only remember it as rumblelows. They had a down stairs where you could buy records. The shop Ron was on about seems to be where i thought it was.My mum rented a tv from rumblelows from the 1960s or early 70s.
Betty. you're right Rumbelow's was on the corner of Mesnes Street/Standishgate I mean a shop defininitely on Standishgate, it might have come next to Rumbelow's or next but one.
the shop in the middle with pinkish board was a toffee shop , remember it well for the prima violets sweets we bought before church at st georges
The toffee shop in the 50's, 60's and into the 70's was Thomas's and next door, or next door but one, was Bill Alker's newsagents, also, Tom Standish had the shop next to Bill Davies's shop
Duncan you're right, Chamberlain's music shop was originally in the row of shops on Standishgate that was demolished in the early 1970s to make way for the row of the then new shops i.e. from Goodwin's to Iceland. Karen the shop was owned by Mr & Mrs Thomas, it was the only shop I knew that stocked Raspberry Ruffles, only because (it was rumoured) they were a favourite of Mrs Thomas, we would always be calling in for some.
