I first saw Wigan in 1947 & it seems it stayed in tact, at least to when this photo was taken. This is just how I remember it.

Lovely pic, thankyou. I love to see the really old ones, but it's nice to see Wigan as we all remember it.

Notice the sign on the shop "RECORDS AND TAPES" At that time we thought tapes were the ultimate recording media. We've come a long way in the interim period.

This view apart from the shop names has changed very little, it's on the opposite side of the road where all the destruction has occurred. Mores the pity!

Seeing this, I remembered once going to Boots for first aid after I got my finger trapped between the swinging doors going into BHS from market square.Some memories are painful!!

Oh how I wish we could have those times back.

Do you remember when Boot had a lending library upstairs?

Comment by: irene roberts on 8th December 2010 at 16:22

I don't recall one in Wigan, but I remember when I was a child they sold books upstairs. I still have the Milly Molly Mandy books that were bought for me from there, still priced 6/- in pencil! Having worked for Boots, I have an interest, and I got a Boots' Lending Library book from a car-boot a few years ago, and if you ever watch Brief Encounter, the main female character, Laura, goes into Boots Lending Library.

@Ron Hunt
by then even ,tapes were due to be phased out, Dire Straits, Brothers in Arms, came out on CD in 1985

who would have thought back then that we would be able to sit around a type writer and reminisce about our youth, and another thing that astounds me is when i used to go in a shop or a pub with my dad he would give his order and say, ho and ten bob out the till which always seemed to bring a smile or laughable reply. well today i went asda with the mrs and she paid for all the groceries with a plastic card and asked for 50 quid out of the till and nobody batted an eyelid

One of the few views of Wigan town centre that is still recognisable. Boots used to have a lot of stuff upstairs, I remember toys there in the early 60s.
