This photo possibly was taken on the same day as the arial one which shows Ranson's Mill. These are all Wigan Welsh players for the 1938/39 season. Percy Moxey died in an air accident in 1942 while training in the RAF, Emlyn Jenkins had already had a sensational career with Salford and a brilliant tour with the RL Tourists in Australia, Jim Sullivan was already a legend in the game, Roy Francis left very shortly after the appointment of Harry Sunderland in October 1938. Harry didn't rate black players! Roy went on to have a great career both as player and manager, Ted Ward, Percy and my father Jack Bowen were all newly arrived Welshmen, Joe Jones was also Welsh.

This photo appeared in the Wigan Observer in August 1938. The paper must have taken thousands of photos of Wigan RL over many years and yet to the best of my understanding they do not have a back catalogue of any photos, a great pity.
