Taken sometime from 1930 onwards - when the original stone tablets bearing the names of the 1800 fallen were replaced by cast bronze plaques. The original stone tablets quickly fell victim to erosion, and an appeal was launched in December 1929 to replace them with 40 bronze plaques at a cost of £8 each.
After WW2 an extension, in two sections, with recesses left at the North and South quarters, was built to accommodate the 24 tablets bearing the names of the WW2 fallen.
