Rev. Alan Prangley Thorne , M.A., Vicar of St. Mark's, Newtown, 1911-1919.
The son of a Liverpool clergyman. He had received a first rate education and came to Newtown fully trained. He had been ordained five years previous to his Newtown appointment, and since then had worked devotedly in St. Helens. Mr Thorne was a bachelor, quite a big fellow, and rather jolly. His mother and sister lived with him at the vicarage which was then at 347 Ormskirk Road. His institution as vicar of St. Mark's took place in December 1911, and was conducted by Dr. Chavalsse, Bishop of Liverpool. Mr. Thorne seemed to thrive on difficulties. His activities brought the schools out of debt, and ensured that the new organ, dedicated in 1912, was also out of debt when opened. Mr. Thorne was very well liked by the Newtown people, and after being vicar for nearly eight years he was appointed organising secretary to the Church Missionary Society with responsibilities for the area extending from Standish to Carlisle.
