The 'Grapes Hotel' corner of St James Road & Sefton Road.
Would love to know the date of the photograph.
I can recall the area where the pub stood being a big bus stop area (was there a newsagents/sweetshop on the opposite side of the road?) and Sharrock and Tickles grocers opposite on another corner.
Yes the newsagents is still there, but bigger than it was during the 60's when it was owned by Jack and Edna Boyers. I remember that during Wigan holiday weeks the newsagents would close, and each morning newspapers would be sold from the bus shelter, now demolished, on the opposite side of the road.
I also recall on the corner of Church St and St James Road there was a haberdashery shop run by a lady known as Miss Charity, though I am not sure that this was her proper name.
the name of the lady in the haberdashery shop was indeed mrs charity
Remember going to a Wedding reception here in the 60's. First time I had ice cubes to crunch on. Also having to go out in an unlit cobbled rear yard to go to a freezing toilet. Strange memories, Celia and Ken Cross wedding.
William Nixon was publican until 1906. His wife Mary then ran the pub until 1925.
