The market hall looks prctically brand new so I would hazard a guess at the late 19th or early 20th century. Thanks for posting Sheryl, it's interesting to see.
An absolutely brilliant photo giving a real appreciation of the atmosphere of the time. Helped considerably by its clarity and detail of the people. Congratulations.
looking at the clothing has to be late 19th century
I'm sorry but Wigan has lost such a Gem . Should have been kept, sadly I live over in Nelson now and they have done the same there. Though some of the homes are now being finally renovated with many of the original features kept on the out side.Excellent picture though, takes me back to some of my early memories in the early sixties.
lovley pic , it says 1877 must be when it was built so must be around that time
This photo was taken was after electric trams started going down Market St, I don’t know which year that was, probably around 1903. In the bottom left corner you can see the tram track, along the left side you can just see one of the poles that held the overhead power lines up, mostly lost in the marks in the sky are the trams power lines, if you look to the left just above half way up you can see the lines going up to top centre of the photo.
Very well worked out Allan H, it was indeed around 1904-05 when Wigan first saw trams, so it's after or around that time.
Can I just add... there was steam Trams around Wigan, before 1904-5.
