In the 1960's we lived beside the station in Gibson Street and my late mummy always said how good the trains were as you could take the pram on it, they where large things in those days with all the children in and on it, and it was cheaper than the buses!
A week before we went on our holiday's my mummy use to send a trunk, to Belfast from this station for only a few shillings! My mummy would have her baking (cakes/pies ect.) as well as a pressure cooker (she cooked everything by pressure) and the cloths for our holiday. We use to go on the 'boat train' from Heysham to see our 'Nanny on the Big Boat' and when we got to our Nanny's in Belfast the trunk would have arrived with everything in, which saved my daddy having to carry lots of cases with everything for seven of us and it meant that my mummy only had to buy the basic grub as she sent a lot of it over in the trunk! How things have changed, not necessarily for the best?
