Great photo, Aitch. Lovely to see Lace's and Stylo again. Apart from the different shops, the general layout doesn't really chage much, does it? And yet I prefer the Wigan of my childhood. We've lost so many individual shops, each with their own smell and character, and so many little entries and alleyways to make way for places with as much character as a bin-bag, but that's progress isn't it?...Or is it?!
View in the distance is looking towards Higher Ince and Toplock. Haigh is about a mile left of the Wutchy in the background
Brilliant aitch! It is good to see the changes from the one I posted.
By the way, on both my shot and this one are 'Seven Sisters'... although they are obscured on this shot. Does anyone know where they are? They are still there today.
The chimney at the bottom of Geenough St has gone by this time. My Mam who's 76 year's young say;s she remember's it being taken down some time when she was a kid, don't know year yet I will have to work on that one
Hi, Dennis...it took my friend from London to point out the seven sisters to me; you don't see what's in your own town, do you? He also pointed out some of the beautiful workmanship high up on the brickwork of some of our old buildings, especially some in Library Street...when you live in Wigan, you don't tend to look up and see them.
The 1947 film Deep Valley is showing at The Ritz, i see.
You must have been to Specsavers! I can't make that out at all!
Now that was film. Starring Ida Lupino and Dane Clark
On the building covered in scaffolding Dennis.
Is that Hunter's Chemist between the two buses on the right of the picture. I remember my mother going there for herbal remedies. I seem to remember them, being on the opposite side of the road, did they move later on?
If you can zoom in Ron, the shop is named as Hunters grocers, so the chemist is probably across the road
sorry the last comment from me is for Henry not Ron
Nice to see again the old underground Petties. I worked in Brooks bros (alexanders) next to these in 68-69 In the mens underground Petty the urinals were in a circle in the middle and cistern was made of glass just like an aquarium perched above you head. you could see people walking above you through the glass (opaque) roof
