The first photo shows the coach just before it crosses the white line that is in this photo. This was the evidence required to get the then council to sit up a take notice.
Many's the time I went up & down Alma Hill on a Ribble bus.
Seems that drivers back then had the same difficulty as many drivers have these days, its called...turning the steering wheel....
Partly agree Helen though slowing down that little bit more would also help. In general it is down to just a few that push the envelope i everything they do, not thinking not all people want or need to get there so quickly.
THe white line, more visible in the previous shot, bulges to the off-side at this point. This shows the highway engineers thought that vehicles needed to swing out at this point to get a clear sight-line up the hill, at the same time as heavier vehicles were able to maintain speed by not having to slow down for too tight a bend. In the later pics of the crash, there is no white line to guide drivers, and the car driver seemed to be pushing his luck.
Mr Long
the pavements never moved in any of the photos...!
It is shear incompetence of the drivers that brought about changes.White line or no white line, slowing down and using ones steering wheel is the only conclusion to any right thinking person.
If you look at this AEC coach in the previous pic, the driver is hugging the curb as he enters the bend. The white line in front of him indicates that vehicles are expected to veer over to the offside as they round the bend. Given the wheelbase of this coach, he would need to cross the white line to get his best approach to the hill. He would need to compromise if another vehicle were coming the other way, but he's doing nothing wrong here, in my view... as one who drove buses for ten years....
