This is a photo showing the Pavillion Cinema and the buildings occupying the frontage of Rodney Street in 1959. The white building in the middle of the block was used as a "dry salters" and the sweet shop on the corner of Millgate belonged to Dewhursts. I used to call in there for "Blackjacks" - 4 for a penny on my way home from the baths. Many happy childhood memories from this neck of the woods. The series of photos showing the mineworkings would be from directly beneath this area.

What a fascinating picture. I had to look at an old map to see what everything was, as it's changed beyond recognition.
As far as I can make out, the roads are, going round clockwise and starting with Millgate at the number 12 position - Station Road, continuation of Millgate leading to Scholes, Douglas Street, Chapel Lane and then Rodney Street. Library Street is parallel with Millgate.
Is that right? Where was the picture taken from?
There are so many pictures of the middle of Wigan so its great to see another area.
Anyone got a picture of the Roman Fig Tree that grew up the wall of the car park next to Stairgate in Station Road?

Catherine, I could say that my dad was very tall but in fact the picture is from a much larger aerial shot. I am unable to upload the complete file and if I reduce the density to make the file smaller it will pixellate something terrible and become useless when an attempt is made to get a close up. The only way that I have found is to cut out a required section around 1k in size.

Ha ha! Of course. Have you got the area in Millgate before that monstrosity of a Civic Centre was built? I can't even remember what was there.
