Great photos Dave I remember the beams coming through Shevy and them having to make a road through the wood opposite the robrite.
Also it looks like there some one still living in a bus at the side of the lock keppers wall.
It's a pity the front of the bus isn't visible, so that it can be identified... otherwise a perfect pic! ;-)
They used to be quiet a few people living in old buses on Balls farms in Gathurst
What a fantastic photo of the coming together of two ages of transport, I know which one I prefer!
These are such a remarkable record of the times they portray, thanks Dave.
Glad you liked this one.It was taken by my older brother,Bob.I remember the camera was an Ilford Sportsman. To the right of the bus the Weir can be seen in full flow as it always was. Some of you will also remember the old wooden caravan nearby that was burned about 1970 and the stone cottage, now demolished but you can still see traces of the foundations.
Dave Ive just been down to Gathurst and the weir is on the right of the canal bridge (Gathurst side) so is that an old weir because the one on the right was newly build when the viaduct was built.
My Grandad Walter Greenhalgh and his son also Walter had converted single deck bus"s on Balls farm .on the field leading down to the canal spent most of my childhood holidaying there.
The stone wall running along the back of the bus is the garden wall of Dean Lock House. On the other side is the tow path. I believe a tramp lived in the bus prior to it being demolished.
Our nan and grandad Cole had a caravan in the field by the canal on balls farm we had the best summers there playing with Pamela and Wendy the two girls who lived on the farm
