August 1980. Billinge Road in front of Highfield View. Rag 'n' bo' men used to come around regularly to collect old rags and scrap iron, in return for which you got a donkey stone for cleaning your front door step. Who says recycling is new!

Yep. They didn't know it, but they were pioneers of recycling. I remember that you could hear our R & B guy in Golborne shouting from miles away.

We had a Rag & Bone man in Holland Moor. I remember getting a goldfish! I called him Sammy & he swam happily around his goldfish bowl for quite a few years.

You just don't see the like any more, it is now white van man knocking on your door.

My Uncle Tommy (Miller) was a rag'n'bo man, he worked Platt Bridge and Bickershaw way.

If I remember right Jacky the rag and bone man played the piano in the Railway Hotel when Ken Gee was landlord, usually early evening especially Fridays. Just lads in having a couple on their way home from work. Ken used to give him a free pint for playing
