Pingot Viaduct and the Iron Horse

Bottom of Brook Lane, in The Pingot, across Smithy Brook. Model of Iron Horse by Eli Banks (used to be in the Miners' Home, Blackpool). The Iron Horse, the first loco to be built in Lancashire, was put to work in January 1813 by Dalglish to transport coal from the Winstanley pits down to the canal at Gathurst. As people also used to ride on the coal train, it has a claim to being the first passenger train in the world. To the right is the old lime kiln.

Derek - do you know where this model went to after the Miner's home shut in Blackpool?

No I don't, but I am trying to find it. Does anybody have any information on its whereabouts? As far as I can determine, none of the major museums have it. I have sent a letter to the Blackpool Gazette to see if they will post a request for information on it.

to my knowledge, there were three built, the last finishing service as a static engine used for threshing corn up until the 1920's when it was taken out of service. I am to understand they ran from the Clarke and Orrell Collieries down to the two tipplers in Crooke. One near bridge 47, two hundred yards downstream and the other one hundred yards downstream from bridge 46, now opposite Crooke Marina. I have mentioned these facts on the Crooke Village website. www.crookevillage.co.uk . I hope that is of some help?
