This house carried the official title / address of 'New Hall', not Garswood Hall as is often thought.
Any official documents relating to Gerrard will state 'New Hall'.

I believe the hall was demolished in the 1920’s. I discovered the ruins when I was about 10, me and my mate cycling through the woods a late afternoon in the Summer hols, we didn’t realise what we had found until I told my dad and he enlightened me. There wasn’t much left, mainly rubble, just a couple of brick arches that might have been a cellar, it was all overgrown. There was a large rectangular pond, obviously man made, it was quite atmospheric, eerie but tranquil.

From Ashton we had to go through the POW camp and three woods to get there, we called them First Woods, Seccy Woods and The Big Wood! Later we found an easier way, along the boundary path and through the broken wall. It was somewhere we visited a few times, sometimes taking reinforcements but I would never go on my own - and we always left before it started to go dark.

POW Camp mention brought back some memories for me. I worked with a German pow who had been interred in the camp. He couldn’t return home to Germany after the War because his family were in Russian held East Germany. He had fond memories of Ashton and it’s kind people. Told me tales of cycling into Garswood village and Ashton for Friday night dances.
He was great friends with Bert Trautmann the famous Goalie who was also a pow with him.
Interestingly, the ‘Chippy’ on Station Rd in Garswood is a hut from the pow camp.
Small world.
