This shop was owned by the Crompton family in the 40's, 50's and 60's
Phil... according to my info the Crompton family ran this off licence from 1911, so the family where there for a good few years.
Hi Dennis,
I didn't know that the Cromptons had the shop so long .I was born in 1943 and I can remember that Mrs Crompton owned the shop then.Later on her son Stanley had the shop.Stanleys nephew Arthur still lives in Kingsdown Road facing the shop.
I lived across the road from Cromptons, and i always remember Mr Crompton wearing his brown smock, the shop always smelled of bread. His son Arnold was a very good swimmer.we had a dog named scruffy, and if we ever left the front door open he'd amble over and sit on Cromptons step.trouble with scruffy he always chased bikes especially bobby ditchfields,my dad took him to our relations in Coppul who had a farm ,and left him there, two days later he was sat on Cromptons step
I had a walk up there along the cut bank last week, and took this photograph of the building... it is all changed...
