Walthew Lane, Platt Bridge, June 1978. The trouble with buses, they get in the way of the background, Droney's, Miss Bootles, Browns shops in this case, long gone. The bus is about to turn into Liverpool Road.

fabulous pics of all the buses AND the backgrounds to them as well. It's wonderful to see the old LUT Number Ones,(memories of going to the Monaco in Hindley), and those long-gone shops. Droney's was like a timewarp and could have been used in a film involving a 1930s clothes shop without being altered.....what a lot of character we have lost in the name of progress. Thanks, Thomas, for capturing it for us all.

I saw a timetable recently for the no.1 from 1986, a daytime bus every 15 minutes from St.Helens to Hindley, now if you miss the bus to Hindley, you may as well walk, where have all the passengers gone? I suspect the chronic queues on Liverpool Road every day could explain...

Is that old Pete Taylor leaning on the rail waiting for the betting shop to open! :-)

My mother worked at Brown's for a time I think as an assistant, I know that every lick of paint and piece of wallpaper in our house in Gas Street came from there!

Keep them coming Thomas!

I think it is Peter Taylor, Dennis.....what a character! When I worked at the Platt Bridge Inn, one of the lads once sent Peter for a pack of Benson and Hedges, and Peter said the shop was out of stock the day before. "Oh well, if they've no Benson's, just fetch owt",said the lad, and Peter came back with two meat pies!.....Priceless! Aren't these pics great? Irene.

Has anyone got a picture of Droney's shop at Platt Bridge or any information regarding William Rosbottom or family who owned this shop in the 1950's? Thank you - Lesley
