Looks like it's just about to turn onto Lily Lane, Woodcock Drive estate under construction in the background.
Great picture Thomas. Got any more of Platt Bridge - same time ?
yes, the building directly behind the bus was the old (disused)tram-shed, I thnk, and the taller building next to it with the bay-window was Salter's Chemists, which moved across the road when that row was demolished.
Great picture again Thomas. Went to and from school in Hindley every day one one of these. Great memories!
The old No.1
You could set your watch by that bus,not like today
i lived in abram and did my apprenticeship at UGB in St Helens.if i was early i'd get the number one if i overslept it was the 320.the first one's i traveled on was the trolley busses.the miners was still open at the time and the palace.very happy days
What a blast from the past... a brilliant photograph!
I cannot remember what the shop was on the corner behind the bus... but next door going away was Mrs Burgess' grocery and sweet shop. The row stepped back then and Tony's barber shop was there.
Just out off shot to the left is Bell's TV and Radio... and Nailor's bike shop next to that.

Ah of course... it was Salter's Chemist!
John B,
The only pictures of Platt Bridge in the 70's are mostly buses, not the most interesting things for most people!
The brick building behind the bus was the old waiting room for South Lancashire Tramways, which ran down Templeton Road ( behind the digger ). The tram sheds ( Wigan Corporation ) where just down the road in Tram Street, still standing.
Tom . . . Pic's of buses still show parts of the streets - put 'em on.
Tom...
I am in agreement with John B, even if the main subject is a bus it will still show the street it was on. Walking Day shots are good for this as well.
I agree too.....you often spot shops and other landmarks you'd forgotten about. I enjoy looking at the background more than the subject.Keep them coming, and thanks to all who contribute these wonderful memories.
Was this a St Helens corporation bus?
I'm a bit unsure about the building behind the bus being part of the old tramsheds. I recall there were public toilets there and a seat on the end wall facing Lily Lane.
To right of the digger the tram shed became browns garage we were one of the people to move onto woodcock drive estate, used to live in downing close
THE TRAMSHEDS WERE DOWN TRAM ST.NOTHING TO DO WITH BROWNS GARAGE,WHICH WAS NEXT DOOR TO PLATT BRIDGE LEGION.q
Only a young lad when that row of houses was demolised, But rember the dentist;s in the row had 3 baby teeth out there.
