You're probably quite right about the crack being caused by mining subsidence, John, but it could have been made worse by vibration from the railway line immediately behind the house (the wigan North Western to Liverpool Lime Street line)

these houses were built around 1890

more than likely mining subsidence . my grandad tommy lowe worked at lavins pit and stones collery. he used to tell me garswood was riddled with underground tunnels. ther was an open shaft at the back of our house on victoria road were maor close is now. it was deep and there wasnt any fence round it.that was when manor farm was there and the waterworths lived there.oo

Used to live in School Lane (59). My brother still does. Spent many happyhours playing in 'the backs' behind the 3 rows of houses. The Cunliffes lived in 95, then. (1960's).
I remember Waterworth's farm, too, and the croft that joined School Lane to Station Road, before the houses on the opposite side of School Lane were built. In fact, my dad (Matt) used to say that the bungalow opposite us was built over a mine shaft.
Dad and my Grandad from Station Rd (Jack Sutton), bothworked the local mines (Lavins, Gaffneys, Windy Arbour, Stones, etc).

i remember you, your mum was peggy? she new my mum margaret . i remember the croft as well used to play there as kids. there was also the cooperative shop where roland wards is now. also mrs brownbill who used to live in the station house i remember her.i was born at 67 station road then when i was 6 we moved to 9 victoria road were i live now

Carol Birch, yes, my mum was Peggy (real name Margaret), and I remember your mum. Didn't you have a brother Paul? I seem to remember him from St. Andrew's School on Garswood Rd. Mrs. Wilson was the headmistress, and was the total opposite to her colleague, Mrs. Dempsey (who lived up on Tithebarn Rd).

I lived at 95 until 1976 when I got married and moved away. I remember all the Shaw family and I think you were the first in the street to get a colour telly! My mum still lives in Garswood and I sometimes see Tommy walking past on his way to the shops. I remember all the Birch family too!
