A view of Farrington's Shoe and Boot Makers which was located in Wigan Lane. Also on the photograph, two other shops. By looking at an old directory for the time, it should be easy to ascertain where the shop was, and what the names of the other two shops were.

The kebab king is located there now. The entry to the right of the photo is still there.

Having said that I'm not 100 per cent sure as the buildings are sloping left to right so it could have been on the opposite side of Wigan Lane. The only other entry I recall is at the side of the Millstone.

I would say the building next to the entry was the the site of what is now, the millstone pub.

If so CliffH then Ron's got his dates slightly wrong, as the Millstone was in existence in 1901

This looks very different to the Farrington's double fronted shop shown elsewhere on this site and according to the directory, Farringtons was at 87 Wigan Lane as far back as 1869.
Could this not be of the other Farrington's shop in Hardybutts ?

I Think I now have the correct details.
In "Wigan Through Wickham's Window" beneath photo "70", A D Gillies explains.
Farringtons moved from this small shop, No 87 Wigan Lane (situated on the south corner of Wigan Lane and Coppull Lane, just north of Saracen's Head) to a double fronted premises 73-75 Wigan Lane just south of the Saracen's Head

Gillies also illustrates in photo "71" the shops/houses immediately to the north of Coppull Lane. Crook's Grocer's no 89 was on the corner.

I have just caught up with this debate. In my opinion these 3 shops might have over time, been formed into the present public house "The Millgate". My view is supported if you compare the door and window openings, rather than the roof line or number of storeys. If so the current fast food establishment at No. 65 Wigan Lane is the re-built property to the right side of the tunnel through the building line on the right of this old photograph. Please add further comment or get in touch if you can either support or question my conclusion. Thanks in Anticipation. c/o Tom Bailey originally apprenticed from Farrington's Boot Makers = My Grandfather

My Grandmother was Margaret Farrington, born in Wigan her Father was a master clog maker. If anyone has any information or photographs of this family I would be very grateful.
