Not a good photograph, but one of the earliest photographs of Wigan Showing a view ( now unrecognisable) of the Market Place.
Featured on the photograph are the shops of; Joshua Holt, ironmonger. Edward Howard, boot and shoe maker. and James Bradshaw, watch and clock maker.

From what direction is this taken from?

Sorry I've no idea. However if you could obtain an old directory You would have an idea, by looking at the address's of the three shops.

Looking from the centre of Market Place towards junction with Millgate. According to 1869 directory, Joshua Holt's shop was 27 Market Place. Present day addresses - Moon Under Water: 5 Market Place, Max Spielman: 19 Market Place.
Excellent photos Ron.

Thanks for the info. Mick Going off your info. It would appear that Joshua Holt's shop ( Which you can just make out the name HOLT) would be somewhere near the new Coffee Shop? Next to, is it the Abbey?

Comment by: Mick on 26th March 2009 at 22:51

Yes Ron, I think it must have been all around that area.

Further to the above: Starbucks Coffee Shop is 31-33 Market Place, so allowing for a slight shift in the numbering, you aren't too far out Ron!

Ron and Mick...Just imagine if all those buildings and many more around town had been kept and renovated/preserved, what a beautiful and interesting town Wigan would be today.
