Central Park 1938 and the "workers" are about to roll the pitch. All Welshmen. Left to right, the legendary Jim Sullivan (still very much playing in 1938 even though he had signed in 1921), Roy Francis (who went on to become the game's first black coach}, my father Jack Bowen, Emlyn Jenkins and Ted Ward.

Remember all except Emlyn Jenkins. I saw Jim play full-back for Wales. Speaking from experience,Tommy Thompson, Warrington wingman rated Jim the hardest tackler in the game He went on to coach Saints. My team, Shamrock Rovers, beat his Under 21s side 21 - 20 in the final at Knowsley Road. Roy Francis had a shop in Dicconson Street and I remember his lad at Wigan Grammar School.
