Another 'quality'photo, I remember working on the second floor up at the far end in the early 90's for 12 months. Used to sit in the churchyard in the summer, eating my butties....

What an attractive building...smooth, red bricks always remind me of Wigan.

Good quality brickwork.

I go there every week jamming with friends.

Prince Charles came to Wigan without Camilla earlier this year on a showery April 3. I was there at this location to watch him when he went first to the Old Courts, before walking the short distance to Uncle Joes Mintball factory, and then by car to Wigan Little Theatre.

These were the County Courts, as distinct from the Wigan Borough Court. Prior to the amalgamation of Wigan Borough Police, into the Lancashire Constabulary, 1969.

I worked next door at the County police offices from late 60's to early 70's.
There weren't half some rum goings on in the parish church gardens in the summer!

In the 1950's this building also housed the offices of Ministry of Labour and National Service , H.M.Customs and Excise (as it was then known) and also the Ministry of Transport Driving Test Centre .

Helen the bricks are red Accrington.

Thanks Alan, I will change that to Lancashire... but then the Accrington bricks were used to build the attractive building in Wigan, so I stand by my comment that smooth red bricks remind me of Wigan.....

the Accrington no 1 engineering brick was designed to stop water ingress and also damp penetration which made it ideal for our area the only other brick with the same quality that I can think of is the Staffordshire blue which is a lot of useless information I know sorry I butted in carry on

rt you are not 'butting in' ... I have lived in two houses built with Accrington brick, no finer brick! They last much longer than modern bricks and look better.

And the buildings always look new.
