Arghh I see it now The photo is taken looking from the back in White Street towards Fleet Street and Ormskirk Road
Len Booth had his barber's shop just around the corner in Ormskirk Road. Anyone remember Len?
I CAN REMEMBER GOING TO LEN'S AFTER SCHOOL. PROBABLY LATE 1950'S. I HATED IT... ALWAYS WAITING FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS, AS ANY MAN THAT CAME IN, HE WOULD CUT THEIR HAIR FIRST.
So true, Ron. We used to wait for ages. You had to kneel up on the chair and face everybody...Short back and sides, and then brylcreem...Bloody ordeal...
I lived in Goose Green and Dad used to take us to a barbershop at the bottom of Little Lane (I hated going.) Anyone remember that one?
Remember going to Harry Fisher's barber's shop at Orrell Post, he was a right old fashioned barber, there was always a box of umbrellas waiting to be repaired in the corner of the shop, a lot of barbers used to repair umbrellas as a side line. Does anybody know if that customer was particular to Lancashire or was it more widespread. Harry didn't serve men before boys as far as I recall though he did charge extra for boys haircuts on Saturdays. fisher's shop closed around 1990, I believe he was over 90 when he retired.
A,W, I can assure you he did cut men's hair before boys. I can see him now saying "This man is working so I'll do him before you" I got so fed up waiting for two hours or so I started going to a barbers at the bottom of Enfield street. Then when I got older, and went to the TLS I went to the barber's in the the MOOT HALL in the Commercial Yard who had 3 barbers No waiting<g> Then progressed to various barbers. Ted Spencers, and a barbers that was upstairs in Woodcock street. I think it was above the fruiterers near Meesons sweet shop? I can see the barber now I think he also worked as a conductor on the buses either before or after he had his barbers shop?
Ron Hunt, I used to go to Harry Fisher's in the 1960's also remember the barber's in the Commercial Yard. I seem to recall that Harry Fisher charged about 1/6 for boys in the late 60's, he charged more for men, I suspect that wouldn't be allowed nowadays.
Ron, the barber in question was David. He had his shop on Ormskirk Road about half way down from the Mount Zion to Sherwood Drive. He was a right character. I always remember going in and asking for a Mod cut. His reply was: 'I haven't got time today, lad'...So short back and sides it was...Grrr.
I remember going to the MOOT HALL barbers in the Commercial Yard and asked for a 'NERO' just cut short brushed forward with a very short fringe ala, EMPEROR NERO I can remember the barber saying to me "YOU NEED TO BE AN HERO TO HAVE IT CUT LIKE THAT"
Just found these photos, where the old pub was must have been very narrow at that point.Love looking at the old photos of Wigan.
