All th'owd chaps in their flat caps used to lean on the bars outside Woolies. It must have been a meeting place for them.
Same with this photo. Saturday mornings in Woolies, looking at all the stuff in the boxed counters.
I think all th'owd chaps had their names put down at birth for a place on Woolie's corner, a bit like applying for membership of the MCC.
A lot of them were turned out of the house after breakfast by their wives or families, and told to stay out and from under the feet, and only return for meals, until the evening.
Im sure the young lady in the foreground will recognize herself, she certainly walked in front of the camera.
That sounds like Blackpool landladies Tony! ;o))
The old gentlemen are waiting for the alehouses to open, of course...
The car in the foreground is an Hillman Imp, the red vehicle looks like a Ford Escort van and the one turning into Standishgate from Station Rd. looks to be a Vauxhall Firenza (The coupe version of the Viva)
The car in front of the Firenza looks like a Hillman Avenger with a Ford Anglia in front of that. Could be Morris 1100 parked up to the left at the bottom. I see the work had already started at the bottom of Standishgate with demolition completed
DerekB. The car in front of the Vauxhall looks like a Hillman Avenger.
its an imp jack,a friend used to have one, more parked than driven.
what really amazes me is seeing the town centre busy.
The car in front of the Vauxhall is a Hillman Avenger, The
car in the foreground, and to the left of the Vauxhall is
a Hillman Imp.
Hillman Imp the worst car in the history of cars. My next door neighbour had one and the head gasket blew and I did it for him, What a cow of a job without taking the engine out. When it was done we road tested it going down Lilly lane towards Platt Bridge before the canal bridge was altered I went over the bridge the car took off and landed at the other side of the road. Most owners put a sack of spuds in the boot at the front to hold them down.
The basic Hillman Imp with rear engine like this one was probably no better or worse than a front engined Mini of the same age, but remember that there were more upmarket models of the Imp, being the Singer Chamois and Sunbeam Stiletto coupe. Also there was a Commer Cob van, and Hillman Husky estate in the 1960s.
That lovely young lady is my very lovely mum!!!
And she really is very camera shy!!!
How on earth did this happen Rita Clark?? ????????
This is my mother Rita Clark, she apologies for the photo bomb 48 years later :)
I am the ‘young lady’ who walked in front of the camera! I was only 16 but I’d like to apologise but it’s now 48 years too late!????????????????
