Digging a path through the snow - Photo from twitter @WiganCouncil

Hi Ian. My mother, and dad tried, in the early evening, during the winter of 1940, to walk along Warrington Road, Spring View, to my uncle, and aunt's house, in Higher Ince.

It was snowing so hard, and getting deeper, and deeper, my dad had to put me on his shoulders. Before we reached St Mary's School, we had to turn back, and go back home.

This is brilliant! Thankyou so much for posting. I am really interested in the 1940s and love the fact that everyone wore hats......look at the young girl's pixie-hood. A wonderful photo.

Everyone getting stuck in to fix the problem, not whining and waiting for the Council a week later, as would happen today!

No snow ploughs then. They all wear hats because it's cold.

Garry, people DID wear hats in the 1940s.....Summer and Winter alike. It was the fashion then.

Dead right Irene. I have an old picture of my father. In the picture he is wearing a heavy dark coat and trilby, cigarette in hand. He is standing in front of a group of his friends. I swear he looks like the leader of the Mob. I thought James Cagney eat your heart out. They had a style back then.

I thought Moor Road and Linden Avenue were in Orrell.

Thanks Kal. Peter and I attend 1940s events and we both wear hats. Peter has an original suit and looks so smart, and I have an original forties hat. People took such trouble with their appearance then.

I remember snow like this in 1963. The bus taking us to school in Up Holland got stuck and had to walk the rest of the way. Mind you enjoyed the snow-balling on the way!

On the morning after the snow my dad opened the back door to go to work on his bike and was met by a 4foot snowdrift. He went back to bed!! It didn't stop us from going to school after the snow plough had gone through

We'll spotted indaloo, the photo is certainly in Moor Road, Orrell taken from where the motorway bridge now exists
