Wasn't Bolton's Ironmongers at the Standishgate end of The Old Arcade?
Bolton's did have a shop on Standishgate selling tools and ironmongery, was there in the 1960's.
That's the one, AW.
Boltons had a small warehouse in the corner of Commercial Yard between Latimers warehouse and the Conservative Club.
Roger Bolton's was still a working foundry in the 1960's, it was situated at the rear of 52-54 Standishgate. The Central Wireless Company had a shop and offices at 52 Standishgate and was a Murphy TV and Electrical goods dealer. It was quite a surprise to still have a working foundry behind a shopping area, almost in the Town Centre. You could access this foundry with a motor vehicle from Back Mesnes Street ( now Mesnes Terrace ) between Baillie's Cafe/ Pie Shop and the then Pram Shop on Mesnes Street.
If my memory serves me, Bolton’s hardware shop was at the Standishgate end of Makinson’s Arcade in the shop that Boots Chemists moved into after Bolton’s vacated it. That’s Makinsons Arcade rather than the old Arcade. Hunters Chemists were at the end of the Old Arcade.
Bailey’s Scotch Bakery, I remember that one and Smith’s Book shop moved into that place after they had to move from the Old Arcade stalk they had opposite the guy with the weighing chair. Not WH Smith but the Local Wigan firm.
