Nick Hampson - the photo was taken in Woodcock Street, which ran between Market Street and Hope St.
The tall ornate building to the left of your great grandfather's shop was a cold store, and later Crank and Burton's plumbing supplies/builder's merchants.

I've seen the 'Rowntree's Chocolates' poster elsewhere. It appears as being a 1923 printing; the lady appearing in a lemon top, and her friend in a striped blazer.
Well spotted Philip.
Thanks Mick. I look forward to your future 'posts with gravitas'.
I recall a Ben Turners in Hindley and a Norman Turners, both butchers.I wonder if they were related?
The cold store was part of Ashton's fishmongers. My mother worked there in the 1950's and my uncle drove a lorry to Fleetwood for ice in the 1930's.
