To ensure that the concrete train laid the carriageway to within the tolerance set by Lancashire County Council +/- 3/16 inch (4mm) the marginal strips had to be level. I walked miles (as a junior engineer) with a machine being pushed to find high spots on these strips between South Lancaster & North of Broughton. Then this "Bump Cutter" sat on the strip to grind the concrete surface. As you can see accidents do happen! The operator was unhurt.
