The Wigan Observer Crabtree press at Woods Street being installed and almost ready with the paper fed round the reels of webs. The then very latest in newspaper technology web offset printing was the first in United Newspapers Group and only 3rd in the country to use this unknown methods. This machine was a revolution in print quality and crystal clear colour pictures. At first it proved to be a real handful, but once bedded-down and became familiar with all the settings and adjustments, it was a big success winning many major newspaper awards.
