Few days before the opening of the M6 past Wigan these were the signs motorists entering the motorway at Mossy Lea junction (now Jct.27) would see. They were erected at every entry point on our motorway system. They are no longer there and I wonder sometimes whether they should be resurrected in view of the numerous accidents now.

Nice picture Barrie. There are now traffic lights where the big sign is. I think the little bungalow is still there too

I like Barrie's picture as well Standisher, as it evokes memories of certain car drivers and bikers, who were eager to travel on the M6 for the first time. The Sixties . . . Ah!

As a lad in the 60s Junction 27 meant summer holidays . Usually to Torbay in my Dad's Ford Anglia.
I loved to tick off county signs on the procession south. Cheshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire , Gloucestershire, Somerset and finally Devon.
The M6, these days seems a much less exciting place.

When the motorway was being constructed 1961-63, from memory I think an elderly couple lived in that bungalow.

I bet they weren't too pleased when they were told the M6 was going to be constructed below their back garden.
