This Leyland Royal Tiger was new to Todmorden
Joint Omnibus Committee in 1934, with bodywork
by Northern Counties at Wigan.

At that time the bus body builders were Massey Brothers of Pemberton until 1967, when Northern Counties bought the firm out.

Ray, when I was a boy of just four years old the family would go to my Aunties in Rotherham. We travelled Wigan to Manchester by bus then to Sheffield on a bus exactly like this one, a long ride over them there hills, nearly 70 years ago now but, I remember the journey very well. Great picture Ray.

Arthur...This bus bodywork was built by Northern Counties
at their Wigan Lane premises. Northern Counties moved to
the Enfield Street site what was formerly Massey Bros after
the takeover around 1967. Cheers, Ray.

Ray is correct, this was built as a one off order in 1934 by Northern Counties. Massey Bros in 1941 had an order for 4 Leyland Titan TD7's delivered in November of that year.

I have a book entitled "Northern Counties" by Bob Howe.
Wigan library in the Life Centre also have a copy of this
fine publication.

This was one of 4 bodies that Northern Counties supplied to Todmorden Corporation and the LMS Railway (who jointly owned the fleet). Two double deckers (Leyland Titan TD3) and two single deckers (Leyland Tiger TS6) were supplied (body numbers 4826 - 4827). Northern Counties and Massey were two seperate companies in Wigan until 1967. Wigan Corporation bought bodies from them both.

I remember the chassis being driven along Wigan Lane. The drivers wore leather helmets and goggles. They looked like pilots from WW1

Wigan Corporation had a small number similar buses from the 1930s to the 1950s in crimson and white. Notable bus operators in green livery were Liverpool, Salford, Bury, Blackburn, Leeds, SHMD (Stalybridge, Hyde, Mossley & Dukinfield), Todmorden, and Crosville.
