This appears to have been taken on the coast of northern Europe - the houses look Flemish to me. It is dated April 1945.
What strikes me about these photographs is how they have turned up at a carboot sale. Usually families keep photos in a box somewhere especially old photos such as this one. I like this photograph - it seems to sum up the man. Amongst the probable chaos around him he can still take the time to calmly smoke his pipe! I bet he could tell a story of his escapades around DDay and beyond. I am glad you found these photos Rev at least they will be taken care of.
Veronica - I'm glad I spotted that one of the police cars had a Wigan reg. no. - and so deduced the pics were of Wigan Police. The hat the stall holder had was for Cheshire Police, so would have missed them if I'd gone by that.
It would seem that the couple had no children - the relative mentioned in Ina's Obit. notice was her brother. Presumably neither he nor any family he had were interested/ close enough to want to hang on to the albums.
Had a mate in the 1960, Clive Bilsborough from Spring view he looked like the man in the photo, maybe a older relation of his.
