This Ribble Leyland bus was new in 1967.
Northern Counties at Enfield Street, Pemberton
built the bodywork. It is seen here at Hope Street, Wigan, shortly after its return from
Ribble at Preston following a repaint, early 1970s.

Well it's not a taxi!!

It is showing the route no. now used by the operator of the Chorley, Wigan to Bolton service.

So smart and shiny bet you could see your own reflection in the superb paintwork...today's buses bear no comparison. You are lucky to go on a bus today and not meet with either newspapers on the floor or cans rolling about and steamy windows!

Is that a dent in bottom front corner?

The 1967 batch of Ribble Leyland Atlanteans were 15 with low height Northern Counties bodies, 1951-1965 ECK951-965E. They were found all over the Ribble operating area from Liverpool to Carlisle. When new six were allocated at Kendal, 1960-5, often used on the Lake District 555 route from Lancaster to Keswick. Wigan got three, 1954/5/7, Lancaster three, 1951-3, Clitheroe, Chorley and Blackburn one each, 1956/8/9. The distinctive front could be identified half a mile away, and were similar to the first ten full height Wigan Corporation Atlanteans, FJP566G and GJP2-10G new in 1969.

Mr X...Thank you for your detailed information regarding the
15 Northern Counties Ribble Leyland Atlanteans. During my time with Ribble in the late 1960s, I drove all three of the
Wigan allocation, usually on the Liverpool or St Helens routes. Two of my favourites to drive were PD3 1760, after
it returned from Preston, following a total rebuild, engine,
bodywork, and repaint, and 899,a single decker with coach seats. I would like to find pictures of these two vehicles.
I have seen pictures of 1760, one when it was painted yellow
as an advert for Lennons, a dreadful image, and a picture of
it after it was transferred away from Wigan depot. Ray.

Caught this many times going into Wigan From Billinge. Used to run every 15 minutes on the hour. The Stork Hotel was opposite the bus stop. And the bus shelter provided a meeting place with our transistors listening to Luxembourg!!

They was so shiny because they was hand painted.

I think rolling cans and newspapers on the floor should be the least to be concerned about when there are about half a dozen CCTV cameras on the buses recording everything you're doing and saying. If you're asking "where?" look for those black domed things fixed to the ceiling. Then we have more rising bus fares bleeding us peasants dry; jumped from £3.60 to 4 quid for a Wigan day rider now. Where's all the complaints?. As usual people just accept it. Then there's the health concerns, with WiFi on buses, which can't be good for your health.

As a young girl travelling on the last bus I think I would have been glad of those cameras AB. More so these days. In fact they have been extremely useful in solving crimes- seeing victim's last movements for instance.

Ab. If it hadn't been for those 'black domed things' the two who seriously assaulted my niece would never have been caught.
Perhaps you would have preferred that?
Give it a rest. You're like a cracked record.

Ab. Do you go to the pub? Do you smoke? Two activities far more dangerous than WiFi. CCTV is not ideal but in this day and age with too many neanderthals about it is better than nothing at all. As for prices going up, when did that ever stop? Life is too short to moan groan all day long. I notice you never object to all the pictures taken on here which are not much different to CCTV but you come and have a look all the same.
