Alan, This picture is just for you.The coach on the left is a Standerwick (Ribble) on its way from London to Keswick, so, yes Standerwick had
a long connection with Wigan for many years.
You are probably aware that Wigan Rugby League Club played in the Challenge Cup at Wembley on
many occasions over the years, supported by many
thousands of loyal fans. Some of the fans went
on the train, some went on Unsworths and Walls
coaches, Others chose to catch the Standerwick
coach just after midnight on Friday night, get
to London about 7.30 Saturday morning, spend the
morning in London, go to the Cup Final in the afternoon, back into London for a few beers and
a meal, and catch the midnight Standerwick coach
and arrive in Wigan on Sunday morning. So in my
opinion, but not necessarily in the opinion of
others, Standerwick had long time connections
with Wigan.

Excellent photo Ray, a real Wigan photo.
It has everything.

Comment by: George on 28th March 2018 at 15:51

You've got it right Ray and a good photo of Wigan to boot.

Agreed, Alan! Wigan when it was bustling and had a character of its own, and the 320 'bus went all the way to Liverpool instead of only to St. Helens as it does now. Happy memories. Happy days. Thanks for posting, Ray.

Sleeveless frocks - it must be hot!

Comment by: Al on 28th March 2018 at 21:05

When the town still oozed charm and character and, most importantly, when we had privacy. Now, when you get on a bus you're voice and images are recorded on CCTV (forget 'On the Buses' more like Big Brother Bus) And wherever else or whatever else you're doing, be it drinking in a pub, going for a swim, eating in a cafe, going to the public toilet (no I'm not joking there as I've seen CCTV cameras in public toilets), going to the library, etc, Big Brother is watching you. Now even if you're mowing the front law, the bus goes past will be filming you with those externally mounted cameras. Even ambulances and bin lorries now have CCTV installed; what on earth for?. This country is becoming a more like a prison, a prison without the bars.

If all those CCTV cameras manage to catch one murderer, rapist or child molester before they can continue their crimes then it is worth it.

Comment by: jack on 29th March 2018 at 13:28

Well said Broady. If you're doing nothing wrong, you've nothing to worry about.

Comment by: Garry on 29th March 2018 at 14:05

Wish I knew who keeps throwing dog poo bags over my garden wall? More camera's the better.

Comment by: Al on 29th March 2018 at 14:09

They want you to believe the old "if you've got nothing to hide you've nothing to worry" way of thinking. It's nonsense. Same could be said for our ever trusting governement; if they have nothing to hide then why is it that when there's a terrorist attack or "lone gunman" shooting that there's never any clear CCTV footage ever shown in the media showing the alleged perpetrator?. 9/11 (no footage of the "plane" hitting the Pentagon for example), 3000 cameras in the Las Vegas and not one piece of video released, no CCTV released after the Manchester Arena attack, same with London, Paris, etc.

Al, If you feel so strongly about CCTV Cameras, please take
some pictures of CCTV Cameras and post them on here, then you can have a debate on their pro`s and con`s. My transport
picture here is for people who appreciate how our town of Wigan used to be. I agree with the comments of Broady & Jack

Oh!Garry that's awful - you do need a camera then on your house wall. My ex next door neighbour used to have a camera on the wall near her front door as a spate of robberies was going on at the time. In the dead of night we all had terracotta balls stolen off the garden walls all along the street. God knows how they managed to remove them - they even took a course of bricks attached! They had been in place nearly a hundred years! So much so they couldn't be replaced.
Sorry Ray !

Comment by: Garry on 29th March 2018 at 22:07

Yes Veronica, they've done the hard bit if you like by picking the dog poo up, just bl.... lazy irresponsible folk. I need a glass of sherry x.

Comment by: jack on 30th March 2018 at 11:26

Al. If anything happened to you, your family or property in the vicinity of CCTV cameras, would you object to them being viewed to obtain evidene to help trace the offender?.

Comment by: EricS on 30th March 2018 at 17:23

I think Al needs to put his tinfoil hat back on.

Comment by: George Orwell on 31st March 2018 at 11:42

Stop taking the wee wee Eric.
I had to wait ages for a bus the other day because they had all gone to drive past Als house trying to film him mowing his lawn on their cameras.

Comment by: Poet on 31st March 2018 at 12:40

Presumably the nothing to hide nothing to fear brigade will have no objection to me coming round this evening for a good gawp through their front windows.

Comment by: Mr X on 12th April 2018 at 09:59

In this early 1970s photograph at Wigan bus station, there are Ribble, Lancashire United and Wigan Corporation buses. The 320 route to Liverpool was operated by all three plus St Helens Corporation. There is also a Standerwick coach outside Whelan's supermarket that became Morrisons in 1978.

Comment by: Amanda on 17th April 2018 at 14:07

There is fine line between objecting to CCTV and being a Peeping Tom according to Poet. Grow up and undertsnd that CCTV is only objectionable to those up to no good and those with a chip on their shoulder. The rest of us don't care because it has never affected us.
