Stringfellows Touring Coach DJP 20
Stringfellows Touring Coach DJP 20

This photo is from Norman Higham, Retired HGV
driver with Stringfellow Bros. Normans father
Tom, coach driver, is stood beside this touring
coach in what I would guess is the 1950s. The
crest in the centre, just below the windscreen
bears the letters S.B.Ltd. I think the coach is
a Bedford, but Norman says it might be a Commer.
The coach bodywork seems reminiscent of Yeates
of Loughborough, or Harrington of Hove. The photo was taken in Southsea, near Portsmouth in
Hampshire, according to the script on the back.

Can that be 1950s with a reg DJP?

Ken....DJP 20 would have been issued in the mid 1950s,
possibly 1955-1957, so those dates are in the 1950s.
Some number plate enthusiast would be able to give a more
precise date of issue. Also, a Bus & Coach expert would be
able to identify the chassis maker and the bodybuilder.

It's a Yeates Europa body on a Bedford SB chassis. I had one... and I also had a Burlingham Seagull-bodied Commer TS3 - both 1950s. Although both had their engines in the front, and so needed radiator caps there, too - the Commer's was hidden under a plain flap, whereas the Bedford's was topped with its griffin badge, as seen here.

Ken...Registration DJP was issued in 1958.
Rev David...Thank you for your comments, I had spotted the
"Griffin" on the radiator cover, indicating that it was a Bedford, but Norman was sure it was a Commer. Regards, Ray.

This coach was first registered in December 1957 and is, indeed a Yeates Europa bodied Bedford SB3. It later worked in Shropshire for a Mr Proce of Wrockwardine Wood and was regularly seen in Shrewsbury.
