This version gives a wider view, and shows some of the pit head.
The caption is easy enough to understand - the only word I didn't know was 'trieuses' - which means 'sorters'.

Could this be where we get the word "triage" from. i.e. the sorting of patients at the A&E

Yes - 'triage' is French for sorting.
