The main winding engines I believe were all steam driven. There were electrical winding engines down the No1&2 shafts, at the Maypole. It was necessary in order to sink a the shafts deeper to reach the Arley seam. So that the coal could still be be wound up the above main shaft, and the other shaft made deeper for ventilation purposes. I did make a query regarding these winding engines in the Past/Forward magazine No35 issue. The copied letter I did receive from the gentleman who was the main electrician who installed the winding engines.
