The end of the line. The former Lancashire and Yorkshire Wigan avoiding line (Pemberton loop) it carried coal trains and passenger trains from Manchester to Liverpool Exchange, in was built to bypass Wigan Wallgate station from Hindley to Pemberton, direct.
The line closed in 1969 and lifted in 1971.

That is a very high embankment, I suspect no HGVs have ever hit that bridge.

Great photo. Sad to see this old line go. Anyone tell what make that classic convertible sportscar is?, I'd say either an MG Midget or Triumph Spitfire, but the bonnet dosent look right for a Midget. My guess would be an early MK1 or 2 Spitfire, which are quite rare now.

It's a Mk1 Triumph Spitfire soft top.
The one behind is a Austin 1100.
