This is my final photograph of the construction of M6 Warrington-Preston motorway series 1961-1963.
Forte's Restaurant and service area are now open to the public.Over the next decades many changes will occur but we still (or most of us) like to use the motorway either for business or leisure. On a personal note,I have enjoyed reading all your comments that have been attached to the photographs and am glad that it has brought back memories from a bygone era.
The following week from this photo, I was transferred to the M6 Preston -Lancaster section that McAlpine had started during 1962. In due course I will upload a few of those construction photographs on this site as it is still the M6

As we discussed a while ago I have been putting some of your great photographs on the Alfred McAlpine Facebook site and the response has been terrific. They have rekindled a lot of memories for some of the "older" ex employees. As discussed I mentioned that they were taken by you on the captions. I am sure we all look forward to your next set of photo's. On behalf of the above THANK YOU.

After we had been out on the ale on Saturday nights we used to make for the Charnock Richard services for something to eat,
The place used to get very busy because it was the only place where you could get food after all the chippys had closed.
You also used to get a lot of bands who had been playing all over the north west stopping off as well.

Soon after it opened, a group of us went from our youth club, Centre 63 in Kirkby, for a meal in the cafe - just to have a run up the new motorway. We were driven by the Youth Chaplain, David Woodhouse, who eventually became Archdeacon of Warrington (which covers Wigan).
Great set of pics, Barrie - thanks for putting them up.

It's a pleasure to look back at mine and your youth of an era of tapes, ranging poles, basic levelling instruments and theodolites. Now it GPS and self levelling lasers etc. My son decided to follow his dad into construction as a site engineer. That is what he uses these days.Downloads to the laptop!!!
A number of the survey team working for McAlpine and others were ex mining surveyors from the regions pits.Great bunch of lads.
