Newly laid CBGB (cement bound granular base) to carriageway. In the distance can be seen Orrell Mount bridge.

No central crash barriers fitted, it was an accident waiting to happen, when one vehicle would get out of control (ie tyre blowout) and enter the other side of the motorway in the opposite direction. It wasn't long before the government had to install crash barriers. How right they were.

This is where Jct 26/M58 Interchange now is.
Smithy Brook is a small stream that is now culverted at this point

If you go onto Google Maps (satellite view) and zoom in onto jct 26, Smithy Brook is shown. On the photograph, between the camera and Orrell Bridge you can see a white strip across the carriageway and that is the Edgewood Hall bridge deck where the now M58 link road passes under the M6
