Barrie, many thanks for submitting these excellent photos of the M6 construction. The one on Orrell Road, which shows the former St. John's Vicarage in situ, is the only photo I have ever seen of it before demolition.
What a fantastic photo. I have passed over that bridge countless times on my commute via the M6. One has to ask what the expected lifespan of the structure is. Given all the motorway bridges were built at roughly the same time one would expect they will all need replacing at roughly the same time. A huge burden for the future taxpayer.
The man wouldn't be able to stand on there like that today, would have to wear a hardhat, possibly some safety harness and a hi viz jacket so bright you could see it from a mile away even though he's working in broad daylight, and the bridge would be completely sealed off with a 20 ft fence around the thing so Joe public can't have a nosey whats going on as though it's some big secret, not to mention temporary CCTV cameras around the place.
Where is this photo taken from as it is now, can't place it?
Photo taken from west side of M6 near East Mount, Orrell looking East towards Pemberton. I was only a young lad but can remember the big houses being knocked down before the bridge was built.
