Ozy Vehicle reg changed in 1963 63a 64b 65c 66d 67e 68f 69g
70h so the Atki must have been a 1968 D.C.

Thanks Derrick, it's just that I wasn't sure what year the photos were taken, but I'd guess at around 1973 or thereabouts. Incidentally Derrick, I called at yours the other week but your neighbour said you'd gone out in the car. Just in case he mentioned someone had been and you were wondering who.

Regards. Ozy.

Hi Derrick, I think the comment "Exact date unknown" referred to the photo, rather than the date of the Reg No.
E Reg finished july 31st 1967, F Reg commenced August 1st
1967,and the letter change continued for many years to alter
on August 1st. My first new car was a Ford Anglia 105E, new
on Nov 28th 1967, Reg No GTE 928F. Kind Regards, Ray

Derick this is a 1968 mk1 Atkinson, the mk2 came out in 1970 H reg. The truck you see is a tractor unit mk1.

There you go Derrick. Now I'll bet you never knew that, now did you ?

Comment by: Alan on 19th July 2016 at 09:31

On the contrary. Gary is quite correct. The photo might be taken in the 1970s, but the truck is F reg 1968.

Derrick, do you remember we had a couple of these at Kwik Save in the 1970s one was a rigid, bl**dy awful machines to drive, I originally had a MK2 MDM 133L Gardner 180, much better than the MK1, mind you, Davey Howatson could make that old machine bounce, boy could he. Then the Seddons and the DAFs arrived, vehicles just got better and better thank goodness !!.

Ozymandias, I think you are probably right regarding your comment on Cheyenne being the same driver. If memory serves me correct his name was Dave, he got his nickname from the TV western starring Clint Walker, he was a giant of a man also, when he sat on his horse his feet almost touched the ground. Dave was very tall over six foot by some inches, does anyone know where he is now I wonder ??.

It sounds as though we could be talking about the same chap here JJP. I would estimate his age at around 74. I knew him from Fred Rose's at Blackrod back in the early 60's, but I was only a kid then. Derrick Cunliffe knew him from handballing sugar at Tate & Lyle's in Liverpool. He emigrated to Australia at one point and went driving the road trains out there, returning to this country sometime in the 80's I think. My brother worked wth him on the tippers, but that's over 20 years ago now and my brother's been dead for 13 years. His surname was either Goulding or Golding. I don't know his whereabouts now, or even if he is still alive. I remember him as being a gentle sort of a lad. Not an uncommon trait among big men.

Regards. Ozy.

Dave Goulding (Cheyenne), if my memory serves me well, left
Robert Baillie soon after I joined,so I did not know him well. He was about 6ft 5ins,and a handsome dude, not unlike
Clint Walker, who played Cheyenne on the TV. He had a very
gentle manner. Another Goulding on the Wigan 1970 scene
was Mick Goulding, a Police Officer, who very often was on
Point duty at the top of Wigan. When he was on night shift
he would come into Baillies depot, have a brew, and scrounge
Guernsey tomatoes, and walk back to his locker at the old Police station with a bobbys helmet full of tomatoes.
If he was on point duty at the top of Wigan when we were
returning up Wallgate with 20 tons of Heinz on the trailer
He would alter his programme, and stop all the traffic so
that we didn't have to make a hillstart, with 20tons on.
and we could swing right into Library Street without having
to stop on the incline. I heard that he transferred to a
Police Force down South, possibly Devon & Cornwall.

Regards, Ray Smyth.

Ray Smyth - sadly, the Mick Goulding you speak of, died about four weeks ago, after a long illness.
He did transfer down south to the Sussex Constabulary, but came back up north about thirty years ago.

There's a piece about Mick Goulding in the Wigan Observer this week, in My World page.
