I remember reading somewhere (maybe even on Wigan World) that one of these signalboxes was especially cold, bleak and draughty, and having to work a shift there was not at all popular with local signalmen.

It was either Blainscough box, or Coppull Hall Sidings, can't recall which.

The Harts lived at Blainscough Hall. They operated Blainscough Colliery there, with a rail link into Coppul Goods yard ( Now Morris's Bakery) and their Haulage Busness also, the Premises which are now Blainscough Works with various businesses operating there

I worked as a signalman in every signal box from Balshaw Lane to Acton Grange, so if any reader wants any info I can give it to them.
Blainscough Box was quite a nice box to work in. Very comfortable and warm. The only problem there was a rail joint right outside on the Up Fast Line was a blasted nuisance when the steam locomotives hit it at speed. As well as the noise, one had to put up with the flickering oil lamps they caused.
It was Coppull Hall Sidings Box at Bank Top that was bleak, cold and a long way from civilisation.
Happy Days.
Tony Cook Retired Signalman.
