A rare visitor to Wigan and pulling a special, this lovely looking loco would be sadly withdrawn from service within two months of this photograph being taken. Within summer and the year's end, nearly every ex LNER loco would meet the same fate. What a waste!
Losing a fair old bit of steam there I reckon.
One of the class survives today, 60532 Blue Peter. Funnily enough only the first of the class was technically an LNER loco 60525 A H Peppercorn as the other were built under BR. Those fitted with the double Kylchap blastpipes were the best runners, although standard double chimney versions ran well. The single chimney versions were not a patch on these.
Very interesting to see the LNER/BR Eastern Region A2 "Tudor Minstrel" on the West Coast maimline! A trainspotter,s delight no doubt! By the way can anyone remember the year in which Tudor Minstrel won the Derby? Must have been the late 1940,s I guess or was it during the war years when the race was run at Newmarket?
Tudor Minstrel never won the Derby. It finished 4th in the 1947 race. It won the 2000 guineas at Newmarket in 1946 but it was sired by Owen Tudor which won the 1941 Derby at Newmarket!!
23 April 1966 60528 serviced at Newton Heath before working the special from Manchester Exchange to Edinburgh via Hawick. Train continued to Berwick with V2 60836, to York with 60824 then 45565 from York to Man. Ex.
About 5 min.late back to Manchester.
