Interesting shot Richard. Correct me if I am wrong but it looks like this is a DMU pulling coaches. I didn't know that they had the reserve of power to do this. Perhaps you or someone else with the knowledge can fill me in on this.
John here have a Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) this one has four power cars, the second and fifth are coaches. Most of the time, we saw these in threes, the coach sandwiched between two power cars. They were powered by Leyland or AEC diesel engines. The best ride was in the coaches, less engine noise.
Hindley Station to Preston and Blackpool, Great. I think we've gone backwards not forwords. You'd have to go to Wigan North Western now.
John , Colin, I do recall the occasional 2 car DMU pulling one or 2 parcel van's Wigan NW - Manchester in the late 70's, don't think the DMUs were in passenger service at the time though. Possibly filling in for the more usual class 25/40?
This is a 4 car DMU and a 2 car DMU coupled together. You can see the yellow front on the second DMU between the fourth and fifth vehicles.
The third and forth are power cars, the first and last are power cars. the dummy cars are second and fifth.
see colin harlow's post.
