Good Looking truck Eddie, looks like its been cut down from a 8 wheeler and a fifth wheel fitted what engine is in it a
two stroke or a Gardner D.C.
It could have been an 8 wheeler originally Derrick, I'm not sure. I was told that it had previously been a concrete mixer. If that had been the case, a 6x2 configuration hardly seems to be the logical choice for an off road vehicle, whereas an 8x4 configuration for a mixer would appear to have been years ahead of it's time, especially for an S21. So I really don't know. Either way, I used it on low loader work, grossing off quite frequently at 70 + tons. Quite remarkable really when you consider that it only had the Gardner 6LX engine coupled to the Foden 12 speed Gearbox. Ignore the spurious badges attached to the front of the vehicle, my brother put those there.
I don't think it's been cut down, many trucks tractor units were double steer like this one. They were known as Siamese. Heavy haulage have them but with double diff. I hope this answers you question Derick. PS the engine could be Gardner, Leyland, Foden Two stroke, Cummins, Perkins. I would guess Two-stroke.
You may be thinking of Chinese Sixes - like the Bedford VAL coach. Twin steer at the front, single axle at the rear.
That's right Rev, Where have I got that word from??? maybe I was thinking of a Cat! The cost to change a rigid to a tractor unit is vast, not only the turn table/5th wheel, but all the air brake systems the the trailer ie valves and electrics, ministry plate MOT etc etc.
Gary If you read what Eddie said the engine was a Gardner
6LW not what you thought, it could have been a Sulzer? Gary
if my aunt had balls she would be my uncle think befour
you open your mouth D.C.
D.C.The last comment should have read 6LX not 6LW D.C.4
