That's a right of mix of carriages. Where would they being heading to?
Odd mix of old carriages and a train number chalked on the smokebox door, if I had to make a guess I'd say an excursion to Blackpool.
It could be going anywhere North, Blackpool, Fleetwood, Lancaster, Morecambe, Carnforth, Kendal, Penrith and Carlisle. It could have possibly called at them all. Remember, there where more railway tracks then than now!
At least Pw there was sufficient room in the carriages to cater for the amount of passengers' using the railway, and the fares were reasonable. Today the fares are outrageous.
Possibly the reason for the odd mix of carriages, if this was a wartime photograph, a lot of carriages were destroyed during the blitz, in different parts of the country, especially in London.
the use of a freight locomotive and an odd assortment of carriages suggests a seaside special.the reporting number on the smokebox tells all the signal boxes that the train passes all the information the signalman requires.
