A stunning photograph showing what buses used to look like.
The bus on left was first registered in 1961. I bought my first new motorbike then; it was HEK 725
I love seeing these old buses, nostalgia trip! Thanks Ron,
Did the Wigan Corporation lease their buses, or were they their property outright.? If the latter, a lot of money was tied up in transport, although having said that, at that time, it would appear that Wigan Corporation were always on the side of their public, relating to amenities.
My cousin Gordon Dinan maintained number 57 for obvious reasons it was sponsored by Heinz.
Typical! Yer wait for ages then two turn up at same b****y time!
Both theses buses are available to view at the Manchester Transport Museum in Cheetham Hill.
Where they have a collection of buses in original liveries from the local transport services which were to constitute Greater Manchester Transport (painted orange and White) following Government reorganisation in 1974
I had a bike HEK 100 1961, Wish I still had the bike and the reg. The bus on the right, DJP 754 built 1958.
Unlike todays buses, these had a smell of their own...great
.
You'd have to wait a long time if you wanted to go to Red Rock on a bus these days.
Alex, I like to think I contributed to that ambience when I was younger.
